The original owners sold the bakery to a bunch of Russians a while ago. The paczki were DRY this year (2015) and not what the original bakers used to make. Overall this place is still awesome and has a lot of the same items, but some things just do not taste the same or as good as before.

Awesome place! Swung by last minute to grab a bunch of cookies, cupcakes and coffee cakes for a family party. Staff was super helpful and they had an amazing selection. Everyone loved the food. Will definitely return!

Well I have lived in Lake Zurich for 28 years and this bakery has been the best until the original owners sold the place. There are never enough donuts made to keep up with demand. The donuts are iced when warm, resulting in all the chocolate and vanilla icing running off. The people working the counter do not know how topack the boxes right. The dough on their huge cinnamon rolls is to brittle, cake donuts dough is too tough due to them mixing the dough too long. The donuts are misshaped, bostom cremes exploding with too much custard in them. These would never reach the shelf if the original owners were still there. The prices have also risen to extreme. I have gone to Marianos and gotten better donuts, at a cheaper price. I hate to say that but it's true. Will have to try another bakery because this one has lost it's way. Shame on these owners.

I've ordered cake pops from this bakery for several occasions, and they always look so fun that I almost feel bad for eating them. But then eating them is the best part because the pops are delicious. Used monster-shaped cake pops as party favors for my daughter's Halloween themed birthday, and the kids loved them.

This is a real bakery with quality products. Sure its small and plain but there is enough selection if you look. How much selection do you need? They are quality not quantity or showiness. They don't have a dozen or two of everything, more like 2-4, so it looks like less. They do have seasonal items, ethnic items, and they do alot of custom order work too. Alot of real bakeries are like this, low supply (try to sell out everyday) but fresh and high quality, low waste to keep the prices nice. Fresh, nothing sits around much. The food is great. No greasy aftertaste at all, like most others. The help is great too. For a small price you can have a great treat, far far better than any chain. And they are across from a nice park and the Lake in a nice area.

We have been going to the Old World Bakery for 7 years and had loved this place until recently. On Mother's we went into the bakery at 9:45 AM to find empty shelves...just a few items left. Only a couple of things left, bought chocolate eclairs and baklava...both of which were frozen / not quite thawed-out yet. The girls working the counter seemed like they couldn't care less. (although the owner shouldn't have put them in that position) Tried again this past weekend and found the same problem. This had never happened before new ownership - I would hate to see this LZ cornerstone go out of business...but turning people away 2 hours before close is a sure way to do it!! I hope the owner reads this and gets this bakery back to where it was before he/she bought it!!!

For the longest time, this was the only bakery in town. And they are okay. Good even. But not great. Every item I have ever had here, seems to leave a layer of lard on the roof of my mouth that you can actually scrape off. Not appetizing. So the first bite is always good, sweet, like baked goods are supposed to be...it's just that soon you realize that it's so heavy that its like a brick in your stomach.

It must have been a different baker today. I took the drive up and sampled a variety. Today's batch wasn't the best, to be honest. My opinion of the glazes stands, plus, they get the nod for best creme-filled donut. 100% The donut texture was good, the chocolate frosting, though thicker, was smooth and of good flavor and the creme filling was not the disgusting "vanilla" you taste everywhere else. Even my partner in crime liked it.

The Boston cream donut was absolutely delicious!!! Texture of donut with creamy velvet filling = definitely worth the calories :)

There was a mistake made to the bday cake I ordered but they fixed it as soon as we realized the mistake. Not sure what would have happened if the baker/mananger/owner (?) Wasn't there but none the less it was fixed. the itemsdon't look the best BUT everything was DELICIOUS! The yellow cake w/ raspberry filling and chocolate buttercream was excellent, the brownies were great the the eclairs were some of the best I've had. Looking forward to the next time I have a need to go back.

This bakery is better than your run-of-the mill places but they have their strengths and very obvious weaknessess. Donuts, pastries great, cookies are like a corn meal consistency and fall apart immediately. Cake is also ok....not great. A full sheet with a decoration will run you $50 as well. Pretty pricey. Today we had our sons 2nd birthday party. We got to pick up the cake and they forgot to make it! They were apologetic but once i agreed for them to do a different cake with different filling because it was my only option or no cake at all for my sons party i was surprised to not be offered anything for their major error! I even argued this with the older blonde owner and she wouldnt negotiate less than $45. They obviously need some new recipes and new business practices. We unfortunately will not being going back.

Great service and quality baked goods. I use their hamburger buns for my burgers and they get rave reviews from my clients. Also, they are a local business which is great for the community.

Old World Bakery is located in the heart of old Lake Zurich right across the street from the lake. For those going east/west along Illionis 22 Old World Bakery is situated in an ideal location with it not being too hard to get to and from there. I do agree with elements of the two other reviews before mine, and there are good and bad with this bakery. As a whole the products here are pretty good, and one cannot go wrong purchasing items from here. I do agree with Liz H.'s review that a lot of their products are "okay." Compared to the quality of the bakery products I can get from Costco I would say this place is very pricey. Again, that is not to say that this bakery's products are bad or subpar, but if I am getting something from this place that is not much different than Costco, then chances are I am going to Costco along US 12 and save the money. Of course, there are definitely specialty items that are unique to only bakeries, and for those items this bakery is the place to go. Service here is pretty hit or miss in that sometimes I go here the service is excellent; other times I go here the service is not so great. I know nothing in this world is perfect, but one would think that at a small town establishment the folks would always be friendly and accomodating and not have the kind of mindless kind of service one gets at the bakeries at bakeries at the large supermarkets. I would say that in the end of the day that this bakery is all right and is worth the trip. The reality is that on the internet you are mostly going to see people who will post stuff about what goes wrong with a place whereas the countless number of satisfied customers might be overshadowed by such reviews. Even though my experience here was not out of this world that is not to say that other people will not experience good service and excellent products.

This excellent bakery is absolutely hiding from anyone who doesn't know it's there. Just across from the lake in Lake Zurich's sparse "downtown" area, lies the reason my co-workers are making fatter every day I come into work. Good thing I only work 3 days a week... Old World Bakery features the BEST European-style pastries: everything from cookies to cakes. My favorite treats from here are the coffee cake (not to be missed, any flavor!) and the almond cookies. If you're in the area, swing by here, you will love it! Meanwhile, I'll be justifying my next trip here by telling myself it'll get me exercising as I find myself walking to the bakery on my lunch break...
